Cells
A Cell is a logical data space with SQL and KV.
since 0.1.0-beta
A Cell is the core unit of data in Combee — a logical data space for one app, providing:
- SQL — a relational database with standard tables, indexes, and transactions.
- KV — a Redis-style key-value store sharing the same lifecycle.
What a Cell is not
- It is not a database server. You never see a hostname, port, or connection pool.
- It is not a container. Creating a Cell has near-zero cost; resources are used only while the Cell is active.
Lifecycle in one glance
| Step | Result |
|---|---|
create | A new empty Cell with a tenant-unique name (strict — a used name fails) |
ensure | Get-or-create by name — idempotent, recommended at startup |
| use | Run SQL / KV against it, per app |
| rename / reset | Change the name / wipe the data, keeping the id |
| delete | Data is removed |
See Lifecycle and Limits for details.
In the REST API
Cells are exposed under the /v1/databases/... path prefix for compatibility, but the public concept is
always Cell — the SDK never exposes "database" terminology to you.
